4 local boats and 2 visitors made up the Blaze fleet in the Carl Dyson Regatta at PEYC. Other classes also taking part included RS300 & 600, 420, Laser and Fast & Slow handicap fleets. (Approximately 35 boats in total).
Saturday dawned bright but alas not very breezy.
With the forecast promising 3-4 later everyone rigged up and hit the water for the 13:00 start, the Blaze fleet being second away. Local hot shot Peter Collings lead off the start line with Oliver Daniels, Malcolm Stewart and Peter Sykes all in close pursuit. A close fought race followed but Pete Collings lead was never threatened.
By the second race, the tide had eased, but still no increase in wind. Oliver Daniels got off the line first but quickly fought his way to the back of the fleet. Once again, Peter Collings showing an excellent turn of speed to come through in first, with Malcolm Stewart second and Mervyn Wright (In his first Blaze Open) third. During this race, Peter Sykes' Kicker tang broke, forcing him to retire and make a dash to the Bosun's Locker to aquire a Stainless Steel U bolt. He was later seen fitting it to his mast.
Race three, wind at last ! Oliver Daniels again lead off the start and managed to get to the windward mark first but was quickly overhauled by Peter Collings going downwind. This order was held to the finish, with Malcolm Stewart coming in third and Mervyn Wright fourth.
Sunday - If Saturday had little wind, Sunday had even less !! The RO sensibly postponed the racing for approximately 2 hours and even then some boats had to have a tow to the start line off Rosyth Naval Dockyard.
Strong tidal currents and a lack of the blowey stuff made for 2 frustrating races. Peter Collings cementing his victories on saturday, with two more wins on sunday.
